This week, from 3 to 6 April, the Campillos circuit in Spain will open the FIA Karting season, with the OK and OK Junior European Championship over 4 rounds, the KZ and KZ2 European Championship over 3 rounds and the two World Championships, one for the OK categories and one for the KZ classes, in two separate events both in a single round. The FIA events program will be completed by the World Cup for the OKN categories in September in Italy.
This weekend in Campillos the 1st Round of the Euro OK and OK Junior will take place, a very important championship from a sporting point of view, which will award the title over 4 rounds. After the race in Spain, in fact, there will be the meetings of Portimão, Viterbo and Rødby. All the most important drivers and teams in International Karting look at this event as one of the most significant to demonstrate their value, precisely because it is held over several events and therefore able to bring out the real technical values better than a single-round event.
CRG was one of the leading teams in this championship last year, taking 2nd place and excellent performances throughout the season with Gabriel Gomez. Having moved to a full-time commitment with cars, the baton in the premier class has been passed to the pair of drivers made up of Davide Bottaro and Sebastian Minns, confirmed from last season, who have been joined by Maria Neto, Alois Girardet and Clovis Nougueyrede. All CRG drivers will race with Iame engines by BM Motors, while Viktor Gustavsson will not be present in Spain after the excellent weekend in the recent COFT race, as the program with TM engines for the Swedish driver will be limited as the KZ championships are his priority. In the OK Junior category, CRG will line up Daniel Miron and Matteis Stigsen.
After free practice on Thursday, the weekend program will give the first official results on Friday with qualifying practice and the first heats, which will continue all day on Saturday. On the final day, Sunday, the Prefinals are scheduled for the morning and the Finals for the afternoon.
Jeremy Iglesias, Team Principal of the CRG Racing Team, introduced the event as follows: “The FIA European Championship is one of the most challenging events of the international season because it is divided into 4 Rounds on very different tracks and some, like Viterbo, where international karting will race for the first time. From a technical point of view it will be a very demanding challenge, also because our driver line up has been renewed with the entry of some young drivers who are still completing their integration path with the team. The races and the activities at the beginning of the season have been very useful from this point of view and the technical material has proven to be very competitive, as we had the chance to demonstrate with the performances of Viktor Gustavsson last week on this same track during the COFT race. We are all very focused on doing a good job and keeping, as it was last year, the CRG colours at the top of the OK and OK Junior classes.”
